After a quiet opening week in the home run department, the Humboldt Crabs have been hitting plenty of them lately.
On Tuesday night, Gabe Giosso hit a pair of home runs in a 6-3 win over the Redding Tigers at the Arcata Ball Park, and on the following night Eureka’s Ethan Fischel hit his first home run for the team in a 7-2 win over the same team.
The home run was part of a big night for Fischel, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and also had a double.
The Crabs, who improved to 12-2, have now hit eight home runs on the season, including two each by Giosso and Andrew Allanson, and one from another former Eureka Logger, Aidan Morris.
Morris is enjoying an impressive season with the team. He is batting .219 with five RBIs, but he has been a difficult out and leads the team with 10 walks for an on-base percentage of .419.
Fischel is batting .231 with four RBIs.
Another local standout, Caleb Ruiz, got his third start of the season on the mound in Tuesday’s win, pitching five strong innings in a no-decision.
Ruiz, a St. Bernard’s graduate, gave up just three hits and three walks, while striking out six.
He faced a couple of former H-DNL rivals and former Humboldt Eagles teammates, with Arcata’s Jaden Gorge and Eureka’s Keenan Morris both playing for the Redding Tigers.
Ruiz is enjoying an outstanding season so far and has an ERA of 0.00 through 13 innings in three starts.
