By Ray Hamill — Former St. Bernard’s standout Caleb Ruiz got his first win with the Humboldt Crabs on Wednesday night.
The Crabs got the better of the Bay Area Force by a score of 7-4 at the Arcata Ball Park for their fourth straight victory.
Ruiz pitched five innings in his debut with the long-time local club, striking out six, while allowing no earned runs on six hits and two walks.
The Crabs had to overcome an early four-run deficit thanks to some sloppy defense, with the two teams combining for seven errors in the second inning.
Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the second, the home team scored three runs to pull back within striking distance and then added two more in the third for a lead they would not relinquish.
Aaron Casillas, Gabe Giosso and Manny Casillas each had two hits in the win, including two doubles by Giosso.
The win was the second in two days over the Force, with the Crabs shutting out the Bay Area club 3-0 on Tuesday.
Manny Casillas, Cade Van Allen and Chad Wilson combined on the mound for the shutout.
At the plate, former Eureka Logger Ethan Fischel finished 2-for-4 with a double in the win and drove in one of his team’s runs.
The Crabs have now won four straight since dropping their season opener to the Lincoln Potters on Friday.
Next up, the Crabs host Seals baseball for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night.
