ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — No lack of offense around the H-DNL last week

Photos by Ray Hamill/ – McKinleyville second baseman Camryn Pinard had eight hits in a doubleheader at Del Norte on Saturday.

By Ray Hamill — There was plenty of offense on display on the H-DNL baseball and softball fields on Saturday.

In baseball, there were 95 runs scored in three doubleheaders combined for an average of almost 16 runs a game.

While in softball, a pair of Big 5 doubleheaders at Arcata and Del Norte produced 65 runs, an average of 16.25 runs a game.

Naturally, with that sort of offense, there were a number of players who stood out at the plate, but none more so than McKinleyville sophomore Camryn Pinard, who came away from Crescent City with eight hits.

And that makes her one of our Athletes of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

St. Bernard’s junior Nick Dugan also had a productive day both at the plate and on the mound, earning him our boys athlete of the week nod.

Our team of the week is the Fortuna Track and Field Team, which dominated the opening meet of the new H-DNL season on Wednesday.

Camryn Pinard

McKinleyville Softball, Sophomore

Pinard is enjoying a sensational start to her varsity career.

The Panthers sophomore was 8-for-9 with two doubles and five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep at Del Norte over the weekend, as the Mack girls capped a good week in softball that saw them win all three of their games.

Pinard, the team’s leadoff batter and second baseman, is one of several sophomores that are off to an impressive start this spring.

Teammate and fellow sophomore Trinity Preston gets an honorable mention here after hitting home runs in back-to-back games last week, as well as playing some outstanding defense at shortstop.

Nick Dugan

St. Bernard’s Baseball, Junior

Dugan leads a very strong Crusaders pitching staff this spring, and the junior standout has been everything we expected through the first few games.

And more.

On Saturday, Dugan combined with teammate Aidan Dorsch to no-hit the South Fork Cubs in a 21-0 five-inning win, while also hitting two home runs and finishing 4-for-4 at the plate.

The junior had a grand slam and a two-run blast, driving in six runs total.

Fortuna Track and Field

The Huskies got the new H-DNL track and field season off to a flying start on their own new track last week, winning three of the four team competitions, the varsity boys and JV girls and boys.

Led by senior Bo Cox, who won four events, the varsity boys’ victory was particularly impressive, with the team’s depth leaving the rest of the field well behind.

The early statement win suggests the Fortuna boys will be tough to stop this spring.
