Sophomores step up big time for Mack girls

The McKinleyville girls scored early in both games of an H-DNL softball doubleheader at Del Norte on Saturday, and never trailed in either on the way to a pair of comfortable victories.

The Panthers won 15-5 and 14-3 in five innings, completing a three-game series sweep of Del Norte and improving to 3-3.

Sophomores Camryn Pinard and Taya Gomes each had very productive days at the plate.

Pinard, who is enjoying an outstanding season so far, had four hits in both game, including a double in each, while also driving in five runs in the opener.

Gomes also hit successfully in both games, including a home run and a double in the nightcap.

Another sophomore, Trinity Preston, capped a huge week for her with another home run in the opener, her second in two games after also hitting one on Wednesday.

Senior Ashley Ballew added two hits in each game, including a double in the opener, while Raina Ausburn was 2-for-3 with a double in game one.

Ausburn also pitched the win in game two, allowing four hits and five walks in five innings, while striking out seven.

Junior Allie Egbert got the win in the circle in game one, pitching all seven innings and allowing just four hits on four walks, while striking out six.

Egbert also hit successfully in both games.

For Del Norte, which dropped to 2-4, junior Josephine Heuberger continued her very impressive start to the season with a triple in each game.

Younger sister Alexis Heuberger also continued to impress with three hits on the day, including a double in game two, while senior Madison Haag had a hit in each game, including a home run in the nightcap.
