CR names Jason White new football coach

Jose Quezada/Humsport.com – Jason White is the new head coach of the CR football team.

By Ray Hamill — Jason White has been named the new head coach of the College of the Redwoods football team, it was announced this morning.

White will take over the re-instated program, which will begin play in the fall of 2022 after a two-year hiatus.

The long-time local coach was one of more than 30 applicants and will return to the sidelines after just one year in retirement, having stepped down as the Eureka Loggers head coach after the 2019 season.

Among White’s first order of business will be to hire a coaching staff and begin the recruitment process.

College of the Redwoods suspended the program in the summer of 2020 for budgetary reasons, but made the decision to bring the team back earlier this year.

When CR president Dr. Keith Flamer announced the decision on March 1, he said one of the conditions on reinstatement would be to bring more local players on board, with a goal of adding 20-35 H-DNL players each year.

White, who played and coached football for 35 consecutive years before stepping away from the Loggers, has more local connections than just about anyone in the game.

The Fort Bragg High graduate played at CR and Humboldt State in the 1990s, before coaching stints at each school.

He also coached at both St. Bernard’s and Eureka for several years each, including coaching the Loggers to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons in 2017 and 2018, and reaching the state semifinals in 2018.
