No testing required for weekend scrimmages

By Ray Hamill — St. Bernard’s and McKinleyville have been given the all-clear for Saturday’s football scrimmage with no COVID testing required this week.

State youth sports guidelines require that football players are tested weekly before scrimmages and games, but only if a county’s case rate is 7 or more per 100,000.

Humboldt County’s case rate dropped to 6.6 per 100,000 on Tuesday.

The Crusaders and Panthers are scheduled to scrimmage on Saturday at Mack High at 2 p.m.

The scrimmage will feature four eight-minute quarters.

In related news, St. Bernard’s will be without five starters for the scrimmage because of COVID contact tracing.

Ferndale and South Fork are both also tentatively scheduled to scrimmage this weekend.

The H-DNL season gets under way next week and will run for five weekends.
