By Ray Hamill — They never got the opportunity to play for a national title in 2020, but the Humboldt State men’s rugby team will close out the year ranked among the top teams in the nation.

The recently released National Collegiate Rugby’s small schools final national rankings for the year have the Jacks at No. 7 and the top ranked team in Northern California

The Jacks’ season came to a premature end earlier in the year because of COVID-19, which has affected sports at all levels all across the country.

The Humboldt State coaches felt their squad was capable of making a run in the 2020 postseason, and judging by the recent rankings they’re clearly not the only ones who felt that way.

The closest NorCal team to the Jacks in the rankings is No. 15 Santa Rosa JC.

The Jacks will be hoping to be back on the field in the near future.

The National Collegiate Rugby association was formed this year and was formerly the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO).
