A group of local mountain bikers got the new high school season off to an impressive start at the Swasey Shred in Redding over the weekend.
The Humboldt Composite team placed third in its division, while the Arcata High team placed fourth.
More than 1,000 competitors from throughout the state were on hand for the two-day event.
“The weather was Humboldt made, cold and wet, but our racers were on fire finishing with four podiums,” Humboldt head coach Sean Robertson said. “(We had) lots of smiling faces.”
Individually, there were a number of impressive local performances, none more so than Arcata’s Vivian Gerstein, who placed fifth out of 37 riders in the JV girls event, getting her junior season off to a flying start.
“Vivian Gerstein started her season where she left off (last year) with a great fifth place,” the head coach said.
In the varsity boys race Tommy Robinson placed sixth, while Kyle Kroeker was third in the JV Boys Gold division and Ethan Hunt seventh in the JV Boys Blue division.
In the freshmen girls race Maggie Odell placed fifth and Haley Kroeker seventh, and in the freshmen boys race, Isaac Johnson was second and Cadence Brown 10th.
In the sophomore boys race Rocco Previde placed fourth and Colton Owens 11th.
Lane Corse, Morgan Harper, Eli Lancaster and Dillon Earle-Rouse each also competed.
