The Humboldt State men’s rugby team is headed back to the playoffs after a 33-0 win at Sonoma State on Saturday.
With the win, the Jacks improve to 4-1 and are guaranteed a postseason berth.
They must wait, however, on the result of this week’s game between Santa Rosa and Monterey Bay to find out whether they will host a playoff game on March 28 or receive a bye straight through to the Pac West regional tournament in Tucson, Arizona, early next month.
Cameron Whitney scored three tries in Saturday’s win, while teammate Dante Cappelano converted on four tries.
Team defense also played a pivotal part, shutting out a Seawolves team that came into the game averaging 30 points in league play.
Despite the win, the coaches will be looking for a better performance in their next game.
“We felt that we did not play to our potential,” assistant coach Vincent Celotto said. “We took care of business, but the squad has a lot of work going forward for playoffs and it all starts Tuesday at practice in Redwood Bowl.”
