Double delight on historic night for CR basketball

By Ray Hamill — It was a night College of the Redwoods won’t forget easily.

Playing in front of a sellout home crowd, the Corsairs didn’t disappoint, winning both games in a playoff doubleheader to send both CR teams onto the third round of the NorCal Tournament for the first time in school history.

The CR women beat Skyline in a thriller, 62-60, holding off the No. 9 seeds with some outstanding defense and rebounding on a night when they didn’t shoot particularly well.

Dennise Horton and Ashley Quigley each were outstanding in the win.

The CR men, meanwhile, took care of business against Sacramento City College, pulling away late for a 75-56 win in what a tight game for much of the night.

Thomas Nelson and Drew Gillette once again led the team offensively. but it was play of the Willis twins, Donald and Bradley, that sparked the late surge and was the catalyst in the win.

Both CR teams are seeded No, 8 and will likely both have to travel for tough assignments at No. 1 seeds next week, depending on results on Saturday.

Lots more to come on what was an historic night for local basketball.
