Local sports legend Ray Mechals will be remembered in a celebration of his life on Saturday, March 21, at the Elks Lodge in Eureka.
Mechals, who passed away recently, was a part of the local sports scene for almost half a century, as an athlete, coach, athletic director and official.
He moved to the area in 1952 after graduating Ocosta High in Washington, and competed in football, basketball and baseball at Humboldt State.
Mechals was a member of HSU football’s Far Western Conference championship winning team in 1952 and later was a team captain.
And that was just the beginning of his contributions to the local sports community.
After receiving his teaching credentials, Mechals would go on to spend the following 40 years coaching multiple sports at St. Bernard’s, Arcata and Eureka high schools, as well as a stint coaching basketball at Zane.
He also served as AD during his time at St. Bernard’s and officiated football at both the high school and collegiate levels for 35 years.
He passed away on February 19 in Washington. He was 87 years old.
The celebration of life will take from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
