By Ray Hamill — It’s going to be a big week for the Little 4.
Three of the conference’s four teams are still alive heading into Wednesday’s North Coast Section Division-VI boys basketball semifinals, guaranteeing at least one of them a trip to a section championship game, and all three a berth in the NorCal Tournament.
On Saturday, all three took care of business at home to lower seeds in the the quarterfinals, with St. Bernard’s defeating Credo 66-58, Ferndale beating Emery 54-51, and South Fork getting the better of SF Waldorf 65-48.
And that sets up an all-Little 4 showdown at St. Bernard’s on Wednesday night, when the No. 1 seed Crusaders host the No. 4 Wildcats at 7 p.m.
In the other semifinal, No. 3 South Fork travels to play at No. 2 California School for the Deaf, where a win for the Cubs would set up an all-Little 4 section championship next weekend.
The top seeds will be favored, having defeated both of their L4 rivals twice each this season, and they will have the advantage of home court for as far as they go in the NCS.
They’ll likely have to play a little better than they did on Saturday, however, when No. 8 Credo challenged them all the way.
Senior Lane Thrap, however, was sensational once again for St. Bernard’s and is enjoying an MVP-type season.
Thrap, who scored his team’s opening 14 points of the game and finished with a game-high 24, contributes in so many ways.
