By Ray Hamill — Few players in North Coast basketball can boast the sort of success that Thomas Nelson can.
Wherever he goes, all he does is win.
In fact, in his last four seasons Nelson has posted a combined record of 93-21 with three different teams, including a remarkable 39-3 record in conference play.
During that time, he played two seasons at Arcata High, one at Santa Rosa JC and this year at College of the Redwoods, winning a conference championship in all four seasons.
And that’s not all.
Nelson also has won two Dick Niclai championships with the Tigers and reached the final four of the NorCal community college tournament with Santa Rosa in 2018.
All in all, that’s some resume, and it doesn’t even include what Nelson will achieve in this year’s playoffs with the Corsairs.
This weekend, Nelson was also named MVP of the Golden Valley Conference and first-team all-state, one of just 10 community college players in NorCal to earn the honor.
“That’s elite, elite company,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said of the sensational sophomore.
The coach added that Nelson has yet to decide where he might play at the next level, and that he is currently focused only on helping the CR men go as far as they can in this year’s playoffs.
No doubt Nelson will receive plenty of interest from top programs, and wherever he ends up you can be sure of one thing.
He’ll bring a winning mentality.
