By Ray Hamill — The Corsairs scored a season high in points on Wednesday night, as they continued to roll with a 96-71 win over Siskiyous in men’s basketball in front of another packed house at College of the Redwoods.
With the win, their 12th straight, the CR men improved to 4-0 in conference play and are now the last unbeaten team in the Golden Valley Conference.
CR led 43-34 at halftime and quickly ended any chance of a Siskiyous comeback with a dominating second half that saw the Corsairs gradually pull farther and farther away, opening up a 32-point lead at one stage.
Drew Gillette continued to shine for the Corsairs, finishing with a team-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers, while Thomas Nelson added 25, with four 3s.
“Drew, what a shooter, what a player,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “He’s evolving into such a complete player right now before our eyes.”
Nelson too has been outstanding for the Corsairs all season despite playing, as Bisio suggested, “with a target on his back,” as CR’s leading scorer and rebounder.
Zac Claus added 12 points in the win, while Donald Willis finished with nine points and Bradley Willis and Isaac Puzz eight points each.
Blake Rossman added four points as CR improved to 17-3.
Afterwards Bisio praised his team’s defense for kickstarting the second-half surge.
“I thought defensively in the second half we really found some traction and that contributed to our shooting performance,” Bisio said. “I felt we played really connected.”
With the loss, Siskiyous dropped to 1-1 in conference and 7-12 overall.
Butte is now second in the GVC standings with a 2-1 record, two wins back of CR.
CR plays at Shasta at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
