The Eureka Loggers lost a close one to Montgomery to open play at the Arcata tournament on Thursday, falling 47-42 after battling neck and neck with the Vikings all game long.

CJ Chaidez led the Eureka boys with 12 points, while teammate Jaeden Thayer added 10 points.

With the loss, the Loggers fell to 2-3 on the young season.

Jackson Giacone added eight points, while Cahliel Garner finished with seven.

Eureka plays McKinleyville on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Arcata 81, Red Bluff 59

The Tigers opened their own tournament with a comfortable win over Red Bluff, quickly responding to their first loss of the season against Lincoln last weekend.

Arcata took control of the game with a big second quarter, outscoring the visitors 23-9 to turn a three-point deficit into an 11-point halftime lead.

Mason Railsback led the team offensively with 23 points, including four 3-pointers.

Garrett Hall also had a big game, finishing with 18 points, while freshman Brandon Bento-Jackson added 12 points on four 3s.

Niko Zambas finished with 10 points in the win and Jack Taylor seven.

The 4-1 Tigers will continue tourney play on Friday.

McKinleyville 44, Piner 83

The Prospectors gradually pulled away in a dominating win, as the Panthers dropped their opening game at the Arcata tournament on Thursday.

With the loss, the Mack boys fall to 1-3 on the season.

The Panthers will try to get back on track against Eureka in tournament play on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Fortuna boys win in triple OT

The Huskies won for the third time in four games this season, but they had to work a little longer for this one.

Fortuna defeated Antioch 95-87 in triple overtime to close out the opening day at the Arcata tournament.

The Huskies will now play Arcata in the winners’ bracket on Friday night at 8 p.m.

Branson Gans led the way offensively against Antioch, finishing with 24 points, while teammate Fernando Atilano had 22 points and Jaden Kelley 20.

St. Bernard’s 57, Credo 51

With several players still missing because of football commitments, the Crusaders opened their season on a winning note on Thursday, defeating Credo at the John McMillan Classic in Cloverdale.

Hunter Davis got the season off to a flying start with a team-high 21 points in the win, while Ayden Hamanaka added 16 points and Jake Fairfield 13.

The Crusaders continue tourney play on Friday.

South Fork 53, Fremont Christian 35

The Cubs won their opener at the California School for the Deaf, defeating Fremont Christian on Thursday.

No scoring stats were available for the Cubs, who improved to 5-3 on the season.

The South Fork boys will continue tourney play on Friday.
