Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Fortuna’s Nyah Cacren and Arcata’s Zakiya Elloway in action during Wednesday’s game.

By Ray Hamill — The top three girls soccer teams in the H-DNL are also the top three teams in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps.

Fortuna, which is unbeaten on the season with a record of 13-0-1, is ranked No 1, with Arcata (9-3) and Eureka (8-1-1) rounding out the top three.

All three teams came into this week in a tight battle for the league championship, with Fortuna pulling out a huge 2-1 win over Arcata on Wednesday night, solidifying their position in the NCS rankings.

On Saturday, the Huskies will travel to Albee Stadium to play Eureka in a game that will decide this year’s league championship.

A rematch between any of these three teams, however, appears more than likely in the NCS playoffs.

With a diluted field of teams playing soccer in the fall, the last two years have featured all-Humboldt county NCS championship games.

Don’t be surprised to see the same again this fall, although which two might make it remains to be seen.

St. Bernard’s is also expected to make some noise in the postseason and is ranked No. 2 in Division-III, according to MaxPreps.

South Fork is ranked No. 5 in D-III.

On the boys side, the H-DNL isn’t quite so dominating.

Fortuna, which secured a seventh straight league title earlier this week, is ranked No. 2 overall in the NCS and No. 1 in Division I.

Arcata is No. 5 in Division I, followed by No. 7 Del Norte and No. 11 McKinleyville.

  1. Might as well change the HDNL to the North Coast Section League… since pretty much every other League moved over to winter soccer like it used to be in the 1980s…

… all the Advanced caliber teams play in the winter… so now the Humboldt Del Norte league is the dominant league for fall soccer… so the only thing left is to pick up the bottom dwellers and promote them to become better because that’s all the HDNL/NCSL has now…

… maybe CIF will create a Tournament of Champions… where the lowest ranked winter team plays the champion of fall soccer… it’s a start…
