By Ray Hamill — Lyndsee Brewer is being kept busy these days, but she’s embracing the challenge.
The sophomore goalie has developed into a solid last line of defense for the South Fork girls soccer team, and is seeing plenty of action these days matching up against the larger H-DNL teams.
Brewer, however, is facing the challenge head on.
“Her attitude is incredible,” head coach Ann Constantino said of the sophomore standout, who probably faces more shots per game than any other goalie in the North Coast Section.
For Brewer, it’s all about the preparation.
“She reads online and comes up with her own drills,” Constantino said. “She wants to challenge herself in practice.”
That hard work appears to be paying off, and Brewer’s game has grown since her freshman campaign.
“She’s got a lot more courage, a lot more confidence, and her hands are a lot more sure,” the head coach said. “And she’s more of a loud voice back there.”
On Friday, Brewer saved a penalty kick against a dominant St. Bernard’s team, giving the Cubs a boost late in the game as the Crusaders were looking to pull away.
Injuries haven’t helped matters for the South Fork defense, with the team’s starting sweeper Jaylenne Harris battling a knee injury all season.
Brewer, however, has gotten plenty of help from defensive standouts Alahni Christianson and Mirna Navarrete, who have played consistently well in front of goal.
