CR women fall to Chabot in San Jose tournament opener

The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team got off to a slow start on Thursday and never fully recovered, dropping the opening game at the San Jose City College tournament 80-74 to Chabot.

The Corsairs were outscored 18-8 in the opening quarter, and fell further adrift in the third quarter before rallying to narrow the gap with a late surge, pulling within four late.

Darienne Kartes scored a team-high 21 points for CR, which dropped to 4-7.

Bobbie Purify added 13 points in the loss, while Ashlynn Maddeaux finished with 10 points.

“We had our highs and lows during the course of the game, but overall we played great as a team,” CR head coach Jain Tuey said. “We did really well defensively and that kept us in the game.”

The Corsairs trailed by 20 points going into the fourth quarter but pulled back to within four before ultimately falling.

CR continues tournament play on Friday.
