St. Bernard’s goalkeeper Maddie Costa

By Ray Hamill — Maddie Costa is making a habit of playing well against Eureka.

The St. Bernard’s goalkeeper had another spectacular performance against the high-flying Eureka offense on Wednesday, stopping 21 of 25 shots she faced to keep her team in contention for much of the game.

The Crusaders eventually fell 4-0 to the unbeaten Loggers, who advanced to play Fortuna in Saturday’s Humboldt-Del Norte League Tournament championship game.

Costa, however, had an outstanding night in goal, her second straight big showing against the league champions, which included a penalty save in the last meeting.

The senior stopper will be key going forward for the Crusaders, who are ranked No. 1 in the North Coast Section in Division III.

The NCS playoff seedings and schedule will be announced on Sunday.

In Division I, Eureka is ranked No. 1, with Fortuna third, Arcata fifth and McKinleyville sixth.

Eureka plays Fortuna in the H-DNL Tournament championship game at Eureka High on Saturday.
