By Ray Hamill — The action on the local soccer fields continues to heat up, with some key games on tap for Wednesday.
In boys’ action, league leaders Fortuna will try to remain perfect in the Humboldt-Del Norte League at home to Arcata.
The Huskies are 8-0 in league play, with Del Norte (6-0-2) the only other unbeaten side and in second place.
The top two teams will play each other twice in the final 10 days of the regular season in a pair of matchups that will likely decide the fate of this year’s championship.
Del Norte is scheduled to play Ferndale on Wednesday.
In other action, South Fork will travel to McKinleyvile, while St. Bernard’s will host Eureka.
In girls’ action, meanwhile, Eureka will try to take another step toward the league crown when the Loggers travel across town to play St. Bernard’s.
The Eureka girls, this week’s Humboldt Sports Team of the Week, are a perfect 8-0 in league play, two-and-a-half games up on Fortuna and Arcata (5-2-1).
The Huskies will also host the Tigers today as each tries to remain within reach of the league-leading Loggers.
In the previous meeting between the two teams last month, the Huskies came away with an impressive 2-0 road win.
The Tigers, led by Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week Karina Zumbrun, will be out for some revenge on Wednesday and looking to continue a recent good run.
St. Bernard’s (4-3-1) is still in the chase for second as well, and will be looking to throw the league race wide open again with an upset over the Loggers.
The girls’ game at St. Bernard’s gets under way at 3:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 5:30 p.m.
The Fortuna and Arcata girls play at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m.
Both games in McKinleyville are scheduled for 5 p.m.
Keep up the great coverage Skywalker😉!
