The Eureka Loggers and Arcata Tigers each won their respective Big 5 games on the volleyball courts on Tuesday night.
The Loggers defeated the Fortuna Huskies at Eureka High in straight sets to remain undefeated in league play, while the Tigers got a measure of revenge against a McKinleyville team that defeated them on opening night, winning in five sets.
At Eureka, Paige Lyons continued to impress for the Loggers, who won 25-14, 25-13, 25-20 for their second win over Fortuna in league play.
Lyons finished with 17 assists to go with four kills and three aces.
“They looked pretty good,” Eureka head coach Rachel Evans said of her players. “They looked pretty solid.”
Junior Malia Guilbert also had a big night in the win, with a pair of kills and two and a half blocks, while Makaila Napoleon continued to impress with six aces to go with four kills and two and a half blocks.
Sadie Hampton added four kills for Eureka, which is now 5-0 in the Big 5 and 15-6 on the season.
The win sets up a big showdown at Del Norte on Thursday night against a Warriors team that is 2-1 in league play and whose only loss came against Eureka.
The Warriors had a bye on Tuesday.
The Loggers also had an impressive showing at the Tamalpais Division-III Tournament over the weekend, going 3-1 at the one-day event.
The Loggers got in some quality games against Division-III opponents, defeating Tanmalpais, Rancho Cotate and Hercules in straight sets (best of three), and losing to Albany, also in straight sets.
Arcata 3, McKinleyville 2
At Arcata, the Tigers defeated McKinleyville 25-12, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 16-14 on Tuesday.
In the second five-set matchup between the two teams in league play, the Tigers rallied from 2-1 down to take the win, barely edging out the visitors in the deciding frame.
With the win, Arcata improves to 2-3 in the Big 5, while Mack drops to 1-4.
Maya Mircetich, Bella Peterman and Willow Ricca each had a team-high 13 kills in the win, while teammate Mekaynea Solia added 12.
Lilli Bowman added a team-high five aces, while Hannah Pereira had three.
Bowman added a team-high 34 assists, while Solia had 24 and Madeline Williams 11.
Lola Renteria had a team-high 36 assists, while Zelda Geren had 24.
Arcata is now 17-8 on the year, while Mack dropped to 10-6.
On Thursday, Fortuna plays at McKinleyville, while Arcata has a bye.
