Wednesday was a good day for the Del Norte golfers.

The H-DNL girls traveled to Brookings for the penultimate round of league play at the Salmon Run Golf Course and the Warriors posted the top two scores on the way to taking the team win.

More importantly, junior Jaylee Keeling took over the league lead for the first time this season, moving one stroke ahead of McKinleyville’s Ingrid Monaghan.

Sophomore Taylor Horner, who only took up the sport last year, posted the low round of the day for her first league win.

The impressive Horner carded a 98, becoming the first league golfer to break 100 since Sept. 21 and just the third all season.

Keeling was three strokes further back, shooting a 101 for the second best score of the day.

And that was enough for her to overcome a six-stroke deficit in the season standings and move her into top spot.

However, Monaghan, who shot a 111 on Wednesday, remains just one stroke back in the race for this year’s league title, setting up a huge final day of action at Baywood on Monday.

No other league golfer sits within 30 strokes of the two frontrunners.

With Horner and Keeling leading the way, the Del Norte girls took the team win with a combined score of 433, which was nine strokes better than the league-leading Tigers, who shot a 442.

Eureka (498) placed third on the day, followed by McKinleyville (500) and Fortuna (556).

The Arcata girls continue to lead the way in the race for the league championship and hold a huge 89-stroke lead heading into the final round.

Eureka’s Matilda Ulrich had the third best individual round of the day, breaking her previous best season score by 13 strokes with a round of 104.

Arcata’s Sabrina Macdonald placed fourth with a round of 108, followed closely by her teammate Hailey Pepper and Del Norte’s Kalyssa Moodie, who tied for fifth with rounds of 109.

Arcata’s Sophia Spetzler placed seventh on the day with a round of 110, with Monaghan, Arcata’s Quetzal Heacock (115) and Shayla Hoffman (117) rounding out the top 10.

Svea Whitmer paced the Fortuna girls with a round of 131.
