It was a successful start to life on the new Albee Stadium field for the Eureka boys soccer team over the weekend.
Eureka hosted Del Norte on Saturday and won 1-0.
The schools’ girls teams also faced off at Eureka on Saturday, with the visiting Warriors prevailing 1-0 and handing the Loggers their first loss of the season.
Also in action over the weekend, the Fortuna girls hosted South Fork and won 7-0.
The Huskies started slow, according to head coach Arnulfo Aguirre, but goals from Jamilet Miranda-Ortega and Jozlyn Dahl and some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Audrey Hayes gave them a two-goal cushion at the halftime.
“South Fork played hard and made us work for our opportunities,” Aguirre said.
Two quick goals from Brooklyn Gonzalez to start the second half ended the game as a contest, before Dahl, Madison Miller and Keyani Crossley all scored later in the half to close out the scoring.
“In the second half we came out with more energy,” Aguirre said.
“Overall it was a great team performance and I’m proud of how the girls picked up the pace and finished strong.”
At Eureka, meanwhile, Lucas Ask scored the only goal of the boys game off a corner kick as the Loggers returned to the iconic Albee Stadium for the first time in three years.
D’Alessandro Medina assisted on the goal.
“We matched Del Norte’s intensity and found a very nice passing rhythm,” Eureka head coach Tommy Learmouth said.
Goalkeeper Mason Beauchamp, who is enjoying an outstanding season, posted the clean sheet with some “stellar” play between the posts, according to Learmouth, while the Eureka defense of Kyan Green, Luiz Gonzalez, Greyden Larson and Mansoor Khan also impressed and helped to keep the Warriors’ attack at bay.
“All in all it was a good team win and the first win on new field, which the boys are pumped about,” Learmouth said.
The Loggers will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they host rival Arcata under the lights at Albee.
