Both Cal Poly Humboldt soccer teams got conference play off to a winning start at College Creek Field on Friday, and it was a particularly good afternoon for one local player.
The Humboldt men got the CCAA doubleheader under way with a 3-0 win over Menlo, before the women took the field and secured a 2-1 win over the same school.
Former Arcata Tiger Izaiah Grosveld was involved in all three goals in the men’s game, scoring twice and assisting on the other.
All three goals came within a 13-minute span in the second half.
In his second year with the team, Grosveld opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.
Seven minutes later he turned provider, teaming with Luke Gomes to set up Seth Uson, who doubled the advantage.
Grosveld would cap a good period for the home team with a second converted penalty kick a few minutes later.
With the win, the Jacks improved to 1-0 in the CCAA and 2-2-3 overall.
They are unbeaten in three games.
The Humboldt women also kicked off conference play with a win, although this one was closer than the men’s game.
Heidie Munoz scored twice for the Jacks, who had to overcome a second-half deficit.
After a scoreless opening period that featured just one Menlo shot, Olivia Sams broke the stalemate in the 50th minute to give the visitors the lead.
Munoz, however, would tie things up in the 60th minute off an assist from Lucy Al-Chokhachy, before securing the maximum points for the home team with the winning strike in the 82nd minute.
Al-Chokhachy assisted on the second goal as well.
Wit the win, the Jacks improved to 1-0 in conference and 3-2-2 overall.
Both Humboldt teams will be back in action on Sunday, when they host Cal State East Bay in conference play.
The men play at 11 a.m., and the women follow at 2 p.m.
