The McKinleyville Panthers got Pacific League play off to an impressive start on the volleyball court on Thursday night, and their team captains played a big role in the win.
The McKinleyville girls hosted Fortuna and won in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.
Senior Lili Loomis and junior Leah Han, both team captains, led the way for the home team, which turned in a strong all-around performance.
“All around, our defense, setting and serving were consistent,” McKinleyville head coach Ashley Washburn said. “We have been working really hard on our mental game this season and it’s starting to shine through.”
A young Huskies team battled throughout and made it closer each set.
“It was a tough match, but our girls put up a fight to the end,” Fortuna head coach Jacqueline Maschmeier said. “It was the first time having our full roster available to play this season, so the girls were finding their groove on the court with a couple new positions.”
Loomis, a middle blocker, finished with a team-high eight kills for the Panthers, while Han added four kills from the outside hitter position.
“I’m really proud of our team as a whole and ecstatic with our team captains and how they lead our team,” Washburn added.
Freshman Aliya Fleming also impressed in the win and finished with 11 blocks.
Two freshmen also stepped up for the Huskies.
Drew Sturdevant led them with four kills, while Isabella Cruz added three kills.
Leili Guerrero also had a good night and added five blocks, while Addie Collenberg finished with 15 digs and Bailey Henderson, another freshman, had seven assists.
“Each set was an improvement,” Maschmeier said. “Mack was able to serve a few tough serves and had a big presence at the net, and we weren’t able to penetrate last night.”
