The defending champs look like the team to beat again in the race for year’s Pacific League championship in volleyball.
On Thursday night, the Eureka Loggers began the defense of their title with a dominating night in Crescent City.
The Loggers opened against Del Norte and won in straight sets, 25-22, 25-22, 25-13.
The Eureka JVs and freshmen teams also won their games to make it a good night all around for the visitors.
“It was really loud in that gym and Del Norte was scrappy,” Eureka head coach Stephanie Napoleon said. “But our Loggers were able to get the win on the road.”
Reigning league MVP Tiarah Maualuga had a big say in the win and finished with 14 kills, two aces and a block.
Likewise with teammate Alena Battle, who has combined with Maualuga during the early season to give the Loggers a potent one-two punch.
Battle had eight kills and two blocks in Thursday’s win.
Ramona Dusel led the Loggers in assists with 15 and also had a pair of aces, while Eddy Hale set the tone on defense with 11 digs and also had four aces.
Zuma Kan added seven digs, Violla Kingsang had eight assists, five digs and two aces and Savanhie Phanhsavang chipped in six digs.
Humboldt Sports reached out to the Del Norte coaches for details, but no stats were immediately available.
Eureka improved to 15-5 overall, while Del Norte dropped to 5-7.
