Junior quarterback Kael Puno continued to impress for South Fork over the weekend, although the Cubs did not get the result they were hoping for in football.
South Fork made the trip to Hayfork to play a Timberjacks program that had not lost a game since 2022.
The home team continued that impressive streak with a 24-22 win, although the Cubs pushed them all the way in an exciting finish.
The Timberjacks started strong, scoring 18 points in the opening quarter, and they carried a 24-8 lead into halftime.
But a resilient Cubs team would make things interesting in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points to pull within two in the fourth quarter.
That, however, was as close as they could come and Hayfork held on to stretch its remarkable winning streak to 40 straight.
Puno was a definite bright spot for the visitors as he continues his fast start to the new season.
One week after a big performance in a dominating season-opening win over California School for the Deaf, the junior QB finished with a team-high 148 yards rushing on 33 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.
The South Fork passing game, however, racked up just 10 yards on 1-of-3 passing, with Puno throwing an interception.
Martin Navarrete also impressed for the visitors, rushing for 90 yards on 15 carries, while Toby Tennessee added 72 yards rushing on seven carries.
Timber Bowman also had a TD for the Cubs who dropped to 1-1.
Navarrete led the South Fork defense in tackles with nine, including six solo, while Bowman, Sawyer McMahon and Koda Walls each finished with seven tackles.
The Cubs will look to get back to winning ways this weekend, when they host Elite High out of Vallejo on Friday night.
The Eagles are 0-1.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
