NH Giants top the 76ers with ‘complete team performance’

Sonny White enjoyed a big day at the plate on Tuesday as the Northern Humboldt Giants continued to roll in local American Legion baseball action.

The Giants traveled to Scotia to play the Southern Humboldt 76ers and it took extra innings to separate the two county rivals, with the visitors prevailing 11-8 in eight innings.

And Hoopa’s White played a pivotal role, finishing 3-for-4 and driving in two runs.

Overall, it was an impressive team performance.

“This was our most complete team performance, team win,” Giants head coach Brandon Coborn said. “Everybody in the lineup contributed at some point.

“I felt like we came out competing. We swung the bats well, we pitched well.”

The Hicks brothers also continued to impress in the win.

Carson Hicks threw 5.1 strong innings in relief for a no decision, as the Giants overcame an early five-run deficit.

Carson gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk and struck out eight.

“It was the best outing he’s had pitching for us this summer,” Coborn said. “His slider was on.”

Carson also finished 1-for-4 at the plate with a double, a sac fly and two RBIs.

His brother Bowdy Hicks, meanwhile, played catcher for much of the game and also impressed.

“He called his best game all season,” Coborn said. “He was solid for us defensively behind the dish.”

Del Norte’s ben Shrewsberry got the win on the hill in relief, throwing the final two innings and giving up a hit and two walks and striking out one.

Shrewsberry also finished 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and two runs, while Brycen Phillips had two walks and an RBI.

Jerry Griffin also made some noise at the plate and was 1-for-2 with a double, three walks and three runs, while Hatcher Matson was 0-for-1 but reached base three times on two walks and a hit-by-pitch and drove in two runs and scored two more.

“He’s doing a great job of getting on base,” Coborn said of Matson, who also made a good diving catch in the outfield.

Zach Platt also starred defensively in the win.

“He’s just improving for us, and he should keep improving,:” Coborn said of the second baseman.

With the win, the Giants improved to 6-3-2.

Next up, the Giants will host the Humboldt Eagles next Tuesday at Arcata High School at 5:30 p.m.
