
The Fortuna girls track and field team showcased its depth on Wednesday, taking first place at the second league meet of the spring.
The host Huskies won four of the 17 events, compared to Eureka’s seven victories, but scored 125 points to beat the field by 17 points for the team win.
There was a good battle for second, with the Del Norte girls scoring 108 points to edge rival Eureka by just two points, with Arcata (61) fourth and St. Bernard’s (58) rounding out the top five teams on the day.
Six different girls placed first in multiple events, including Eureka speedster Elizabeth Rominger, who took first in the 100 meters for the second straight week, and capped a good day with a victory in the 400m.
St. Bernard’s had a good day in the sprints, with teammates Lulu Vainuku and Alyssa Boham finishing second and third, respectively, in the 100m, and that speedy duo teaming with Sahara Tupua and Paula Bullock to edge Eureka in the 4x100m relay.
Eureka’s Claire Gast, Natalie Wyllie, Fortuna’s Madison Ruiz and Karlie Gurney and Arcata’s Bella DeCarli each also won two events.
Gast paced the field in both the 1600m and 3200m, with Fortuna’s Alexa McCall second in the 1600m, followed by McKinleyville’s Amara Som in third, and Eureka’s Summer Morales second in the 3200m, followed by Fortuna’s Meztli Chinas in third.
Wyllie won both hurdles races, while Ruiz won the 200m and teamed with Amy Aubuchon, Brida Lester and Gurney to win the 4x400m relay by a comfortable 22 seconds.
Gurney also won the high jump with a PR of 4’ 9”, followed by Del Norte teammates Annabelle White and Lucy Garcia in second and third, respectively.
Del Norte’s Zakayla Robinson placed second in both the 200m and 400m, with Fortuna’s Jacky Cortez third in the 200m and St. Bernard’s Amber Smith third in the 400m.
Arcata’s DeCarli won the 800m, followed by McKinleyville’s Som and Lydia Davis in second and third, respectively, while Aubuchon was second across the line in the 100m hurdles, followed by Fortuna teammate Elizabeth Trumbo in third.
Del Norte’s White finished second to Wyllie in the 300m hurdles, followed in third by Aubuchon, who had a good all-around day.
DeCarli also teamed with Rose Mondragon, Zoe Cappuccio and Stella Jeandet to comfortably win the 4x800m relay.
In the throwing events, Eureka’s Sosie Behler placed first in the shot put, followed by Del Norte’s Aurora Mitchell in second and Arcata’s Melanie Jackson in third, while Melody Brennan led a strong team performance for the Del Norte girls in the discus, with teammates Aurora Mitchell, Hollyn Wakefield and Kamryn Curtis in second, third and fourth, respectively.
Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin continued her impressive spring with a victory in the long jump for the second straight week, followed by Fortuna’s Addison Burgess in second and St. Bernard’s Scarlett Zerlang in third, while Burgess won the triple jump, followed by Zerlang in second and McLaughlin in third.
And rounding out the winners on the day, Del Norte’s Kansas Coulson placed first in the pole vault, followed by teammate Alexandra Eckart in second and Fortuna freshman Lania Fontaine in third.
