Cash Mobley gave us a timely reminder on Tuesday why he is one of the most dangerous young players in the Little 4.
The Ferndale sophomore hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the Wildcats to a 16-11 win at South Fork to keep their championship hopes alive.
Mobley finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and scored four runs in the win, as the Ferndale boys improved to 2-2 in the Little 4 and 10-2 overall.
And he wasn’t the only young Ferndale player to impress in the win, as the Cats carried a 16-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the home team rallied late to narrow the gap.
Junior Colton Renner also had a big day at the plate for the visitors, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBIs, as he continues his impressive spring.
“Offensively, the bright spots were Cash and Colton,” Ferndale head coach Justin Andersen said. “They had great at-bats all day long and produced with runners on. We hit the ball from top to bottom.”
The loss dropped the Cubs to 2-3 in conference and 6-10 overall.
“Tip of the cap to the Cats, they came ready to play from first pitch to the final out,” South Fork assistant coach Alex Finn said.
Prescott Langer pitched five innings for the win on the hill and got plenty of run support from a Ferndale lineup that showed no rustiness despite having played just one game in the previous 12 days.
“I thought Prescott threw well,” said Andersen, whose team led 10-5 when Langer left the mound after five innings. “He was in command, and it was good to see him get ahead in the count. It was nice to see him come out aggressive.”
In addition to the big games for Mobley and Renner, Ferndale senior Tanner Pidgeon also had an impact at the plate and finished 2-for-4, while sophomore Brenden Toler finished 1-for-1 with a hard-hit double that almost snuck out for a home run.
Langer also was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Despite the loss, there were some brights spots for the Cubs, including the fight they showed late in the game and the continued strong play from Kael Puno.

The impressive sophomore was a threat every time he came to bat and finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Mason Bell also impressed for the home team, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while teammate Tyson Mulder returned from an injury layoff and had an immediate impact, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base.
“Our base running has been outstanding, as long as we can get runners on,” Finn said. “We’re finding ways to steal bags and get guys around.”
Kaidyn Henderson (1-for-1 with an RBI and a run), Braeden Steinle (1-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base), Dorje Johnston (1-for-1 with a double) and Ryan Tosten (1-for-3) each also had a base hit for South Fork.
Shawn Schmidt added two RBIs, while Sheyne Casey was walked three times on his way to scoring twice, and also played some strong defense at multiple different positions.
Travis “T-Bone” way got the start on the sound for the Cubs, with Tosten, Cody Wheeler, Johnston and Casey all pitching in relief.
Despite the win, Andersen believes the Cats have plenty of room for improvement.
“We’re still not where we want to be,” he said. “But the pieces are there. We’ve just got to find a way to put them together.”
Next up, the two teams will play each other again at Ferndale on Thursday.
