A pair of St. Bernard’s freshmen got their first varsity base hits on Tuesday, as the Crusaders won big at Hoopa to keep their unbeaten run going.
The SB boys won 15-0 in five innings, improving to 5-0 in the Little 4 and 13-0 on the season.
And while three outstanding seniors continue to play key roles for the team, it’s been the impact of several younger players that has been the story of the season so far for the last remaining unbeaten local team.
That continued to be the case on Tuesday, with Brylon Smith and AJ Campbell both finishing 1-for-1 and getting their first varsity base hits. Smith also had an RBI.
“The highlight of the day was freshmen Campbell and Smith both getting their first varsity hits,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said. “The young guys are doing a great job supporting our three amazing seniors.”
Those three “amazing” seniors — Michael Manzi, Tyler Hinrichs and Luke Brunton — continued to play important roles in the win.
Manzi got the start on the mound and threw three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five, before Hinrichs took over and secured the shutout with two hitless innings, while allowing one walk and striking out five.
Manzi also led the way at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while Hinrichs was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.
Brunton also made an impact at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, as the St. Bernard’s bats combined for 17 hits.
Henry Hinrichs (2-for-3 with two runs), Maccoy Rickson (1-for-3 with a double and an RBI), Braylon Johnson (1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk), Brody Gaser (1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs) and Mason Noel (1-for-2 with two runs) each also hit successfully ion the win.
No stats were immediately available for the Warriors, who dropped to 0-4 in the Little 4 ad 4-7 overall.
The two teams will play against at St. Bernard’s on Thursday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
