Colton Schaad has wasted no time adjusting to the collegiate wrestling mats.
The former Del Norte Warriors and 2025 Humboldt Sports Big 5 Boys Athlete of the Year is now competing for Jamestown University in North Dakota and is getting ready to travel for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association national championships.
The event will take place in Louisiana, beginning late next week.
Schaad qualified for the prestigious event after claiming an NCWA Northwest regional crown in Washington this past weekend.
The 2025 Del Norte graduate won all four of his bouts in the 174-pound bracket, including a 13-1 win over Robert Lee out of the University of Idaho in his final.
Jamestown is an NCAA Division-II program in transition after recently making the switch from NAIA.
The Jimmies competed in the Division-II level this winter but are not eligible to compete in the NCAA tournament until next season.
Instead, Schaad and his teammates traveled for the NCWA regional tournament and enjoyed plenty of success, with seven of them claiming regional titles, including Schaad.
“He’s been doing really well, and we’re excited for him,” his father and Del Norte High head coach Clinton Schaad said.
In addition to his win over Lee, who was the No. 2 seed at the regional tournament, Schaad also beat the top seed in the bracket — Ridge Kehr, also out of the University of Idaho — in his semifinal, winning 6-2.
In his quarterfinal, the No. 5 seeded Schaad knocked off No. 4. Nelson Wong out of the University of Washington, 9-2, giving him victories over three of the top four seeds on his way to the championship.
The NCWA national tournament will take place at the Brookshire Grocery Arena in Shreveport and gets under way next Thursday.
