The Ferndale Wildcats continued their impressive early season in baseball with a pair of wins at the Maxwell tournament on Friday, including a victory over a conference rival.
The Cats opened the day with an early matchup against Biggs and won a high-scoring affair 21-3 in five innings.
They followed that later in the day with a 7-2 win over South Fork in six innings.
With the two victories, Ferndale improved to 4-0 on the young season.
And the players came ready to go despite an early start to the day.
“I like the energy we came out with in the first game,” Ferndale head coach Justin Andersen said. “We had to play bright and early and you always wonder how that’s going to go, but we came out with energy and consistently put the bat on the ball and put pressure on them.”
Prescott Langer continued his impressive start to the new season with another big game against the Wolverines, both on the mound and at the plate.
The senior standout pitched the opening three innings for the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits and three walks and striking out six.
Sophomore Cash Mobley threw the final two innings.
Langer also made some noise at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, while Cade Renner went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Colton Renner also impressed in the win, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs.
Tanner Pidgeon (1-for-2, three RBIs, two runs), Westin Ayala (1-for-2, three RBIs, two runs) and Bradley Williams (1-for-3, RBI) each also had a base hit in the win.
Despite a long layoff between games, the Wildcats continued to impress against the Cubs later in the day.
They scored three runs in the top of the second and kept their Little 4 rivals at bay the remainder of the game.
Ayala pitched a complete game for the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits and three walks and striking out five.
Travis “T-Bone” way also impressed on the hill for the Cubs.
The South Fork senior has looked good early in the season and threw a complete game in the loss, doing enough to keep his team in the game.
“I thought he threw really well,” Andersen said. “He gave his team plenty of opportunities to stay in the game.”
Mobley (1-for-3, two RBIs), Cade Renner (1-for-2, RBI) and Tristen Titus (1-for-3, RBI, run) each had a base hit for the Wildcats.
Ferndale will play Maxwell for the tournament championship on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
“I like what I’m seeing so far,” Andersen said. “We’re getting contributions from top to bottom and I’m looking forward to seeing us continue to grow.”
Sheyne Casey, Mason Bell and Tyson Mulder each finished 2-for-3 for the Cubs
“Credit to South Fork, they played a good game, a clean game,” the Ferndale head coach said. “They’re obviously improving.”
Earlier in the day, the South Fork boys defeated Chester 6-5 for their first win of the season.
Casey and Bell each also impressed at the plate in that game and both players went 2-for-3 with a run, with Casey hitting a double and also driving in a run.
Way and John Stafslien each also had a double in the win.
The Cubs are now 1-2.
