CPH men punch their ticket to NCAA tournament, women miss out

By Ray Hamill — Sunday night’s NCAA Division-II selection show brought some good news and some bad news for Cal Poly Humboldt basketball.

The Humboldt men have qualified, receiving the No. 8 seed for the West Region tournament.

But the Humboldt women have missed out despite their strong finish to the regular season, which saw them win eight straight games to close out.

However, they would loss to Cal State Los Angeles in the CCAA tournament semifinals on Friday.

The LA women went on to win the tournament championship and received the No. 5 seed for the region tournament.

The CPH women closed out the season 20-9.

The Humboldt men, meanwhile, will open on Friday and get a rematch against unbeaten Cal State East Bay.

Game time is set for 7:30.

The two teams faced off in Saturday night’s CCAA Tournament championship game in Pomona, which the Pioneers won 80-63.

East Bay is 30-0 on the season and has won all three games against Humboldt this season, although one of those victories came in overtime.

The Pioneers will host the regional tournament in Hayward.

The Jacks are 17-14.
