The Pioneers are 30-0 for a reason.
On Saturday night, the Cal State East Bay men’s basketball team ended Cal Poly Humboldt’s pursuit of a CCAA Tournament championship with an 80-63 win at Pomona.
The loss, however, does not necessarily mean the end of the road for the Jacks, who must now play the waiting game.
The Humboldt men can still qualify for the NCAA West Region tournament, with the brackets set to be announced on Sunday night.
It’s quite possible the Jacks will receive the No. 8 seed for the tournament and get to face the unbeaten Pioneers once again in the opening round next week.
Saturday’s game, however, got away from them in the second half, as the East Bay men continued their remarkable season.
Shakir Odunewu scored a team-high 18 points for Humboldt, which dropped to 17-14.
Teammate Drew Ardouin added 14 points in the loss, while Rob Jenkins chipped in 13 points.
The Humboldt women’s team, which lost its tournament semifinal 87-55 to Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, will also be eagerly awaiting Sunday’s selection show.
The Jacks are 20-9 after finishing second in the CCAA regular-season standings.
