For the second consecutive season, the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team is headed to the CCAA Tournament.
The Jacks secured a spot in next week’s tournament with a 93-82 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay at Lumberjack Arena on Thursday night.
The Jacks acme into the game having lost six of their previous seven games, but answered the call to extend their season past this weekend.
With the win, they improved to 14-13 overall and 12-9 in conference, and they took over sole possession of third place in the standings with one regular-season game remaining.
The tournament berth is a nice achievement for first-year head coach DJ Broome.
“It’s a really big accomplishment to be able to make the postseason in year one,” Broome said. “I have elite help with a great staff and owe our guys a lot of credit for buying in and coming together as a group so quickly. I’m excited about what’s still out there for us to accomplish this season.”
Humboldt had six players finish in double figures in scoring.
The game featured 11 ties and nine lead changes, with Monterey Bay (16-11, 11-10 CCAA) keeping things tight throughout much of the first half.
Next week will be a big one for Cal Poly Humboldt basketball.
The Humboldt women, who had already clinched a berth in the postseason tournament, were also in action on Thursday and stretched their winning streak to seven straight with a 62-47 win over Monterey.
With the victory, the Jacks improved to 19-8 overall and 17-4 in conference.
The victory clinched third place outright in conference and the Jacks can tie Cal State Los Angeles for the second best record in the CCAA with a win at home against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday and a loss for LA against champion Cal Poly Pomona.
The Humboldt men also host San Marcos on Saturday.
The women take the court at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3.
