The H-DNL wrestlers continued to make their presence felt at the CIF state championships on the second day of tournament action on Friday.
Arcata freshman Taylor Bell and Del Norte brothers Thunder and Wyatt Lewis went a combined 4-0 on the mats in Bakersfield to give the league a shot at three state medals on Saturday.
The Lewis brothers are both guaranteed to medal after each won their quarterfinal on Friday morning, while Bell won a pair of elimination matches in the consolation bracket to remain in contention for third place.
After receiving an opening-round bye, both Thunder and Wyatt have gone 3-0 to move within two wins of a state title.
Remarkably, this is the fourth straight year Thunder has medaled at the prestigious tournament, as he looks to close out his high school career with a bang.
The senior is seeded No. 4 in the 126-pound bracket and on Friday he got the better of No. 5 Aaron Meza of Esperanza High with a 9-1 major decision.
The victory sets up a semifinal showdown against top seed Paul Ruiz of Buchanan High.
Younger brother Wyatt, a junior, has been every as impressive as his older sibling and is guaranteed a third straight state medal.
On Friday, the No. 3 seed in the 157-pound division defeated No. 11 Sebastian Garcia out of Junipero High, 7-0.
The victory sets up a semifinal showdown against No. 2 Jacob Perez out of Everett Alvarez High.
Bell, meanwhile, won a pair of elimination matches on Friday to keep her podium hopes alive.
The outstanding young wrestler is one of just six freshmen in the 32-girl 110-pound bracket and one of just three among the 12 wrestlers still competing in the division.
After going 1-1 on the opening day of competition on Thursday, Bell got Friday off to a winning start with a victory by pin over Liberty’s Jesirra Persaud in the consolation bracket.
She followed that later in the day with a technical fall over Madison Ramirez out of Chaparral High.
She will be back in action on Saturday against Nohea Booth of Marina High School and needs just one more win to medal.
