Three H-DNL wrestlers have been crowned North Coast Section champions and will advance to this week’s state championships.

Del Norte brothers Thunder and Wyatt Lewis each secured a section title with big performances in the Section Masters Tournament at James Logan High School over the weekend, along with outstanding Arcata freshman Taylor Bell in the girls tournament.

As NCS champs, all three will make the trip to Bakersfield later this week for the prestigious CIF tournament.

The Lewis’ brothers strong showing helped lead the Warriors to a fifth-place finish as a team.

Bell, meanwhile, has been one of the stories of the season on the local mats, and the freshman has wasted no time adapting to the high school level.

The No. 3 seed in the 110-pound bracket won all four of her matches over the weekend, including a 6-0 decision over the No. 2 seed, Liberty’s Jesirra Persaud in the semifinal.

In the championship round, the young Bell defeated Dougherty Valley’s Emily Yeung 15-7.

The Lewis brothers were equally impressive for the Warriors.

The two siblings were each seeded No. 1 in their weight divisions and both went 4-0 in tournament action.

Thunder, a senior, competed at 126 pounds and defeated Liberty’s Christopher Anderson in his final.

The Del Norte standout will be making his fourth trip to the state tournament and has placed there in each of the past three years.

Wyatt, a junior, competed in the 157 bracket and defeated Casa Grande’s Caleb Quintua, who was the No. 2 seed, in the final.

He will be making his third trip to the state meet, having placed in each of his previous two appearances there.

As a team, the Del Norte boys finished in a tie for fifth in the NCS with John F. Kennedy, scoring 100.5 points each.

Nine other H-DNL wrestlers placed in their weight divisions, including seven boys.

McKinleyville’s Thurman Henderson had the next performance on the day and placed an impressive fourth at 138, while Del Norte’s Davion Johnson (190) and Fortuna’s Waylon Shaw (120) both finished fifth in their weight classes.

Another Del Norte wrestler, Remington Escobedo, also had a good tournament and finished sixth at 150, while a pair of Arcata teammates finished seventh — Chase Bickmore at 144 and Silven Yoder at 132.
