Talty, Hoogendoorn lead the way as Redwoods women win at Mission

Nora Talty and the College of the Redwoods women posted their second win of the week at Mission College on Friday afternoon, winning 89-65.

The points tally was a season-high for the Redwoods women, who also defeated Southwestern Oregon 64-57 at home on Monday night.

The two victories lift CR to 8-7 on the season, as the team gets set for its final conference tune-up at Skyline on Saturday afternoon.

Talty was hugely influential in both of this week’s wins, scoring 25 points against SWOCC and 23 against Mission.

“She has been a huge component to our success this year and continues to lead our team in the right direction,” Redwoods head coach Bree Northern said of the former Arcata Tiger, who also had 11 rebounds for a double-double at Mission, as well as four assists. 

Mia Hoogendoorn also continues to play a key role for the team and finished with a double-double on Friday, adding 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

The freshman is having a big impact for the team in her first season of collegiate ball.

“Mia has adjusted well to the collegiate level and continues to be a driving force for our team,” Northern said of the Lake County native.

With such a high points tally, there were several other standouts in the win, including Addison Wingate, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, as well as Caidence Young, who finished with eight points and six rebounds.,

“I thought we played well overall as a team,” Northern said. “We shared the ball again, hit shots and played together. It was great seeing the team chemistry out on the court.”

Mayleah Jackson added eight points, five rebounds and three assists in the win, while Paityn Erlenbush had seven points and four rebounds, Itzel Torres had eight assists, three points and three blocks, Kalie Chittenden had six points, and Cayenne Pruter had five points.

On Monday, Talty added nine rebounds and three assists against SWOCC to go with her team-high 25 points, while Hoogendoorn had a double-double, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Redwoods started fast and opened up a 21-5 lead in the first quarter.

“We were hitting shots and played with so much passion,” Northern said. “We did a really good job of sharing the ball, and it allowed us to play as a cohesive unit.

“I am so proud of my team and how hard they played the whole game. We stayed composed in the last few minutes when it got close and ultimately were able to pull off the win.”

The CR coach also paid tribute to the fans who came out to support the team.

“Thank you to all the fans, family, friends and community for coming out and supporting us,” she said.
