It’s still early in the season, but the Cal Poly Humboldt women’s basketball team continued to impress in conference action over the weekend.
After posting a 76-65 win at Cal State San Marcos on Friday, the Jacks followed that with a 62-49 win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon.
With the two wins, the CPH women improved to 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (6-4 overall) and they are tied for the conference lead with Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State.
Also in local college action over the weekend, the College of the Redwoods men lost in the final of the Santa Rosa Kris Kringle tournament, falling to the host school by a score of 101-81.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the CR men, who dropped to 10-7 on the season.
The Cal Poly Humboldt men were also in a action and split a pair of conference games.
The Jacks lost at San Marcos 64-56 on Friday, before responding with a 83-72 win at Monterey Bay on Sunday.
With the split, the Jacks are now 2-2 in the CCAA and 4-6 overall.
On Sunday, the Cal Poly Humboldt women set the tone defensively from the opening tip, jumping out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and never relinquishing control.
The Jacks held the Otters to just 15 points combined over the first two quarters, building a commanding 39-15 halftime advantage.
Points off turnovers proved decisive, as Humboldt capitalized on its defensive pressure to score 27 points off Monterey Bay miscues.
Shade Satica led all scorers with 16 points, and also had five rebounds, four steals, and three assists in a complete all-around effort.
Riley Sanz added 14 points on an efficient 5-for-12 shooting performance, knocking down all three of her attempts from beyond the arc and recording four steals on the defensive end.
The CPH and Monterey men, meanwhile, played a back-and-forth game that featured 14 lead changes and six ties.
The Lumberjacks, however, would secure the victory with a strong finish.
Wayne Hampton III delivered the standout performance of the day, pouring in a career-high 22 points on 5-of-8 shooting while going 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Hampton also knocked down three 3s and repeatedly came up big in momentum-shifting moments as Humboldt seized control in the second half.
Next up, both Humboldt teams will host Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA action on Jan. 2.
