College of the Redwoods is building some momentum on the wrestling mats.

Over the weekend, head coach Brandon Benvenuti and his men’s team traveled to Modesto to compete in the NorCal Regional tournament and it was a successful trip for the local community college program.

Two of the CR wrestlers — Caleb Aguilera and Jared Williams — placed in the top eight to qualify for this year’s state championship tournament.

The two-day state meet will take place in Rocklin this weekend, with the action getting under way on Friday.

Aguilera led the way at the regional championships and finished sixth at 133 pounds, with Williams finishing seventh at 165.

CR also had three other wrestlers place ninth — Sam Blue at 141, Isaiah Bell at 149 and William Hernandez at 157.

All three of them are alternates for the big state meet.
