Arcata boys tournament highlights another busy week for local teams

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The Fortuna boys will be one of four H-DNL schools included in the eight-team field at this week’s Arcata boys tournament.

By Ray Hamill — A December of tournaments continues this week in local high school basketball, highlighted by the always anticipated Arcata boys tournament.

The action gets under way on Thursday afternoon and features four H-DNL teams in the eight-school bracket.

The host Tigers, who are 3-4 on the season, open against against Red Bluff (3-3) at 7:30 p.m.

Del Norte, Eureka and Fortuna will also make the short trip for the tournament.

The Warriors are 4-1 after winning all three of their games at last weekend’s Yreka tournament, including a 59-55 overtime win over Eureka in the championship game, and they will get the opening day under way when they play Montgomery (4-2) at 4:30 p.m.

Also on opening day, Eureka (4-1) will play South Medford (1-1) at 6 p.m., and Fortuna (2-5) will play Windsor (1-2) at 9 p.m.

The tournament runs for three days, with the championship game set for Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Also in action this weekend, the McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s boys will try to keep impressive starts to the new season going at the Mt. Shasta tournament.

The Panthers (5-1) open against Yreka (3-2) at 5 p.m., while the Crusaders (2-1) tip off on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Weed (4-2) and will also play Durham (3-1) later on the same day at 7 p.m.

The South Fork boys (2-6) will also be in action this week at their own Gene Cotter memorial tournament, opening on Friday against Roseland Prep (3-4) at 4:30 p.m.

Several of the H-DNL girls teams will also be in action at various tournaments this week.

Fresh off their championship at the Gridley tournament last week, the Eureka Loggers (5-1) will try to keep their fast start to the new season  going when they travel for the Windsor tournament, opening against American Canyon (1-3) on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Both the McKinleyville and Fortuna girls teams will play at the Redwood Invitational tournament in Healdsburg.

The Huskies (4-1) open against Ukiah (3-2) at 5 p.m., while the Panthers (4-2) play Tamalpais (1-2) at 6:30p.m.

The Ferndale Wildcats (2-1) will also be in action at the Weaverville Holiday Classic, opening on Thursday against Willows (0-4) at 7 p.m., while the St. Bernard’s Crusaders (2-2) will be in action at the Mt. Shasta tournament, tipping off against Etna (1-1) at 2 p.m., also on Thursday.

The Del Norte girls (3-1) will travel to Redding for the annual Harlan Carter tournament, opening against University Prep (3-1) on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
