Redwoods men and women enjoy productive weekends in tourney play

The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a pair of wins at the Shasta Crossover tournament over the weekend.

The CR women defeated Solano 66-59 on Friday and followed that with a 72-50 win over Yuba the following day.

Redwoods is now 6-5 on the season.

The Redwoods men were also in action at their own Coach Tregs Classic and split two games.

On Friday night, CR fell 93-79 to Southwestern Oregon, before getting the better of Mendocino College 99-89 on Saturday.

The Redwoods men are now 7-5.

Mayleah Jackson had a big game for the CR women against Solano and finished with a team-high 16 points, as well as four assists, while Nora Talty had a double-double, scoring 11 and pulling down 11 rebounds.

“We had a great first half and set the tone early,” CR head coach Bree Northern said. “The ladies did a great job sharing the ball and played very selfless.”

Itzel Torres added 10 points and a team-best five assists in the win, while former South Fork Cub Cadence Young chipped in nine points, as did Paityn Erlenbush off the bench.

“We struggled in the second half with Solano’s pressure, but ultimately were able to come out on top,” Northern added. “I loved out energy and effort out there.”

The CR women continued to impress on Saturday.

They started fast, outscoring Yuba 19-11 in the opening quarter and stretching the advantage to 32 by halftime.

Jackson capped a great two days with a game-high 25 points in the win and also had a team-best six assists and three steals.

“Mayleah Jackson had a huge game for us (on Saturday) and truly helped get us going in the first half,” Northern said. “We did a great job sharing the ball again and we continue to improve our ball movement with each game.”

Torres and Cayenne Pruter each added nine points in the win, while Erlenbush had seven rebounds and Aliyah Vigil and Addison Wingate finished with six rebounds apiece.

Next up, the CR women play at Santa Rosa on Wednesday night at 6.

Cody Whitmer led the CR men against Mendocino and finished with 21 points, while Marcos Rosales added 19 points and Alfonso Medina added 18 points.

Six players finished in double digits in scoring in the win, including Kaden Erlenbush (16), Jack Clancy (13) and Nate Sweet (10).

Next up, Redwoods will travel for the Modesto tournament, opening against Yuba on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
