College of the Redwoods improved to 2-0 in men’s basketball with back-to-back wins at the Live Like Geno Tipoff in Napa over the weekend.
And they won with two very different performances.
On Saturday, the CR men won a fast-paced, high-scoring matchup against Los Medanos 106-102 in overtime, and they followed that with a slower-paced 78-66 win over Mendocino on Sunday.
“After playing a fast-paced, high-scoring overtime game (on Saturday), this one was slower and more controlled,” new head coach Justin Claus said. “I thought our ability to adapt to a different pace and game plan was motivating to see, especially this early in he season.”
Three Redwoods players in particular got the new season off to an impressive start and were named to the all-tournament team, a group that included Marcos Rosales, Cody Whitmer and Alfonso Medina.
Rosales scored a game-high 23 points against Mendocino, while Whitmer added 20 points.
Medina scored seven and was instrumental on the defensive side of the ball, guarding the Eagles’ most dangerous player “incredibly well all game,” according to the coach.
The CR players will try to keep their fast start to the new campaign going when they travel to play at San Francisco on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
