By Ray Hamill — With two weeks to go in the regular season, the Ferndale Wildcats are now just two games from completing a perfect season of not allowing any points.
McKinleyville, and in particular Arcata, will hope to have something to say about that, and a Luke Lemke led Tigers team will be eager to end Ferndale’s incredible run on the final day of the regular season.
For now, however, the Wildcats continue to take care of business as they eye a piece of history that not too many teams ever achieve.
Last weekend, the high-flying Cats comfortably took care of business against Hoopa for the second time in four weeks, cruising to a 67-0 win.
Remarkably a 67-point game was their closest in the Little 4 this season.
The Cats have now outscored their eight opponents by a combined 517-0, including 291-0 in four conference games.
And with that in mind, Ferndale remains steady at No. 1 in the Humboldt Sports Power Rankings for the 10th straight week, dating back to the first rankings of the year in the preseason.
No. 2 St. Bernard’s also holds steady for the seventh straight week as the Crusaders get set for a huge showdown this weekend.
Head coach Matt Tomlin’s team is also 8-0 (4-0 in the Big 4) and can clinch a first-ever outright Big 4 title with a win at No. 3 Fortuna on Saturday night.
That game will take place at Husky Field and the home team needs a win to keep its championship hopes alive.
The Huskies are 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big 4, and their only conference loss came by just four points at St. Bernard’s three weeks ago.
No H-DNL team has shown more improvement over the past month than the Huskies, who started the year 0-3 and have gone 4-1 since then.
The Huskies are coming off a 28-14 win at Del Norte last weekend and have won two straight since that four-point loss at Crusader Field.
Del Norte, meanwhile, holds steady at No. 4.
It’s been an up-and-down campaign for the Warriors, who saw any chance of winning a sixth straight Big 4 title end with last week’s loss.
However, the Warriors are still playing for the playoffs and will be eager to close out strong over the final two weeks, with games at Eureka and at St. Bernard’s remaining.
Arcata, meanwhile, is No. 5 this week.
The Tigers are 4-4 overall and remain in contention for a third straight Little 4 championship.
