Loggers hold on at South Fork after strong first half of play

The Eureka Loggers battled to a 3-2 win at South Fork in H-DNL boys soccer on Wednesday night.

The visitors came out ready to go and enjoyed the better of exchanges in the opening half on the way to opening up a 3-1 lead before the break.

But the Cubs made a game of it in the second half and pushed the Loggers al the way.

“We played a great first,” Eureka heads coach Tommy Learmouth said. “I thought we held our composure and discipline well.

A successful second-half penalty kick pulled the Cubs within one, but the Loggers were able to hold on down the stretch.

“I thought in the second half South Fork played with a lot of energy and intensity, and they played very direct and with a lot of confidence moving forward, and it challenged us,” Learmouth added. “South Fork is always a tough place to go and play.”

Lucas Ask and Isaiah Herbst both scored for the Loggers, who also benefited from a South Fork own goal.

Levi Grossman and D’Alessandro Medina each also had an assist.

No scoring details were available for the Cubs.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as league play begins to wind down.

Eureka hosts Fortuna and South Fork travels to McKinleyville.
