It’s shaping up to be an impressive fall for a group of hard-working local gymnasts.
Late last month, the Redwood Coast Gymnastics team traveled to compete at the Stars Challenge in Redwood City and turned in a strong performance.
The local club traveled with 12 girls, eight of whom were debuting at a new level, and all 12 qualified for the state championships, which will take place next month.
“We had a number of girls performing for the first time at new levels and I’m glad that they had a good first experience,” team head coach Brian Van Pelt said. “I thought it was a fairly good meet. While not perfect, it’s a good starting point for the season.”
Hannah Naylor led the way for the team in Level 3 competition and placed second all-around in the Junior A Division with a score of 36.775.
Naylor placed third in both the bars (9.3) and floor (9.35) to highlight her big performance.
Her teammate Jessie Bestul also impressed in the Junior B division, placing third place overall (36.0), including a third-place finish on floor (9.25) and fifth on bars (8.825).
Other notable Level-3 finishes for the Redwood Coast Gymnastics roster included Zoey Long’s third-place finish on the bars (9.0), Annika Dieker’s fourth-place on beam (8.9), Laura Barkdull’s 9.0 on floor, Cara West’s 8.85 on vault, and Abigail Clair’s 8.525 on floor.
In the Level 4 competition, Redwood Coast’s Myiah Punch led the team in the Junior B division with a 35.1 all-around, including a standout 9.15 on beam.
Additional highlights in Level 4 included Maya Dalton’s fourth place on floor (9.15), Addie Bellermann’s fifth place on bars (8.8), and Aubrey Dalton’s career-high performances on vault (8.8) and bars (8.8).
Competing at the highest compulsory level, Level 5 gymnast Momo Baxter debuted her routines with strong performances on vault (8.75) and floor (8.8).
The team, which trains at Flips for Kids Gymnastics in Eureka, will continue preparation for the state tournament at this weekend’s Pink Meet Invitational in Fremont.
The state championships will be held at the Sonoma County Event Center in Santa Rosa on Nov. 14-16.
