By Ray Hamill — It’s shaping up to an historic year for Ferndale High sports.
In fact, it already has been and we’re barely a month into the new school year.
Over the weekend, the Wildcats continued to dominate on the football field, cruising to a 58-0 win over Eureka, their second straight blowout shutout victory over a Big 4 opponent.
And you could make the argument that’s not even the most impressive team at Ferndale High this fall.
The school’s girls soccer team has been every bit as impressive, and even more so from an historical point of view.
We’ve seen some legendary Ferndale football teams in the past, but this year’s girls soccer team is setting new standards for the program, including a (first-ever?) victory over Eureka this past weekend.
The Cats, who also defeated South Fork 5-0 on Tuesday, have not lost in 10 straight games, during which they have posted seven shutouts and outscored their opponents 34-4.
In fact, those two Ferndale teams have enjoyed an incredible 11 shutouts combined since Aug. 29.
But that’s not all.
This year sees Ferndale High School field a boys soccer team for the first time in a long time, with the Wildcat JVs facing off against powerhouse programs such as Fortuna, Arcata, Eureka and Del Norte.
The school’s JV football team is also 4-0, including three shutout victories, while the Ferndale volleyball team is 2-1 in conference and appears poised to challenge St. Bernard’s for this year’s Little 4 championship.
All in all, it’s been a very good start to the school year for the Wildcats sports programs and that makes Ferndale Athletics this week’s Humboldt Sports Team of the Week.
And that’s not all.
One of the school’s seniors also features among our athletes of the week.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Prescott Langer
Ferndale Football, Senior
Like his teammates, Langer is enjoying an outstanding start to the new school year.
And pound for pound the Ferndale senior could be the best all-around football player in the H-DNL right now.
The standout running back/linebacker is not just a game-changer at the skill positions, but also one of the most physically dominating players on the North Coast, who impacts games in so many different ways.
In addition to helping set up his teammates for success with his physical play and blocking, Langer also ran in for four touchdowns in a weekend win over Eureka.
Langer’s incredible impact this season can be gauged by the fact he leads the most dominating team in the H-DNL in receiving yards per game (20), rushing yards per game (116.5) and TDs (10).

Tiarah Maualuga
Eureka Volleyball, Junior
The best player on the best team in H-DNL volleyball thus far is our second athlete of the week this week.
Maualuga is playing at an MVP level for the Loggers, who are 3-0 in the Big 5 and all alone at the top of the conference standings.
On Tuesday, Maualuga led her team to a straight-sets win over Fortuna and finished with 13 kills, eight digs and two blocks as she continues to play a pivotal role.
Maualuga and her teammates will close out the first half of their conference schedule with a tough matchup against Del Norte at Eureka High on Thursday, and no doubt Maualuga will be front and center once again.
