Red-hot Ferndale girls stretch unbeaten run to nine straight

The Wildcats have been the story of the season in local girls soccer and they’re only getting better.

On Saturday afternoon, the Ferndale girls traveled to Eureka and knocked off the four-time defending North Coast Section champion Loggers 2-1.

With the win, the Little 4 leaders stretched their unbeaten run to nine straight games, eight of which they have won.

And they did it with what was arguably their best performance of the season thus far.

“It was probably the first time this season that collectively every girl had their best game,” said Ferndale head coach Bailey Davy. “They were just on, and it was just a really good performance by everyone.”

Teresa Catana was involved in both of the Ferndale goals, while freshman Abigail Gossi turned in a outstanding performance to help key the victory.

The always dangerous Madison Hagemann continued her excellent start to her high school career and netted the opening goal, with Catana assisting on the strike.

The Cats carried a one-goal advantage into halftime, but would add to their tally when Catana made it 2-0, with the young Gossi getting the assist.

And Gossi earned the praise of her coach with her performance.

“Abby had a fantastic game,” Davy said of the winger/midfielder. “She was literally saving goals at one end and creating goals at the other end.”

The Loggers would score with around 16 minutes remaining in the game to make for an exciting finish, but an outstanding Ferndale defense that was led by standouts Claire Renner, Michaela Ellsmore and goalkeeper Tinnley Pidgeon held firm to secure the win.

The Cats have posted shutouts in six of the nine games in their unbeaten run, while outscoring their opponents 29-4 during that run.

The Ferndale girls, who are 2-0 in the Little 4, will resume conference play on Tuesday when they host South Fork.
