VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP — Loggers, Crusaders win final pre-league games

The Eureka Loggers won their final pre-league game in volleyball on Tuesday night, defeating Hoopa in straight sets.

The Loggers won 25-5, 25-13, 25-9.

Likewise with the St. Bernard’s Crusaders, who got the better of Fortuna in their final pre-league game on Monday night, winning 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22.

The Loggers will open the Big 5 on Wednesday night when they host defending Big 5 champs Arcata in a game that got switched from Thursday, while the Crusaders will open the Little 4 at Ferndale next Tuesday night.

Tiara Maualuga led the way for Eureka on Tuesday, finishing with eight kills and two aces, while teammate Macy Secor added six aces and four kills.

And head coach Stephanie Napoleon likes a lot of what she’s seeing from her players ahead of conference play.

“Our team is really coming together and having a lot of fun,” she said.

Alena Battle led a strong night at the service line against Hoopa and finished with 11 aces and three kills, while Violla Kingsang added 11 assists and three kills.

Ramona Dusel also impressed with six aces, two kills and a block and Makenna McNamara added seven assists.

No stats were immediately available for Hoopa.

The Eureka JVs and freshmen teams also won their games in two sets.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, will go into the Little 4 as one of the expected frontrunners.

And Monday’s win over a Big 5 opponent will give them some added momentum going into next week’s conference opener.

“Our team is showing some real promise for our upcoming league,” head coach Sejay Sarti said. “I’m proud of the growth each player has made during this preseason.”

The Crusaders also lost a hard-fought game against Trinity last week, 25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 26-24, 15-8.
